Starving Children

Last night I took a group of students from North Suburban Church to an organization called Feed My Starving Children (www.FMSC.org).  We went to a new warehouse in Schaumburg, IL, where we prepared and packed food for shipment to third world destinations.  Though we worked only for 1.5 hours, we were able to prepare 14,904 meals, which will serve 41 children for a year.  Our hands would be the last hands to touch these meals before they are opened and used by children, families, and caregivers far away.

Chicken, vegetables, soy, and rice: that was the meal we prepared.  Simple.  The chicken provided the flavor; the vegetables provided the essential vitamins; the soy provided the protein; and the rice provided the carbohydrates.  The protein of the soy will keep the starving children’s stomachs from bloating, as maybe you’ve seen in pictures.

I highly recommend this organization.  Not only is it for a good cause, but also it’s an easy way to serve.  I was very pleased to learn that 94% of all donations go directly to providing food and relief, while just 6% goes toward warehouses, employees, etc.  In addition, FMSC provides other, creative ways to give.  They have a program where food is exchanged for native products, such as necklaces and coffee.  All the money earned from the goods goes directly back to buying more food, to prepare more meals, to feed more children, continuing the cycle of relief.

One of my favorite books of the Bible is the book of Revelation.  Revelation was written in order to encourage and comfort, exhort and warn, Christian believers who are growing weary from the hardships of life.  Revelation both recognizes the dismal human plight and what this plight looks like from God’s vantage point.  In the face of human suffering and moral compromise, God needs us to know that, in the end, we win.  In Revelation, God looks his people in the eye and tells them not to compromise their faith, to keep believing, and never to give up.  Keep serving, keep striving, and keep believing; despite the view from earth, we are winning.

We are called to victory, to overcome.  FMSC is a place where you can experience victory taking place, right before your eyes.

  1. Sam, I so appreciate your blogposts. I find something to stimulate thought or, as in this case, outreach in each one. Have also started forwarding them to others. Just this morning a friend wrestling with bitterness read your post called “The Post” and said how much it helped her. Thanks for taking the time to write so carefully and with such excellence.
